After buying my Kelly Rae Roberts artwork from the “Restored” shop in Loughborough, it came to light that this was no ordinary shop. This shop from the moment you walked in was very different and one that touched my heart so much I had to write and share it with you all.
Where did the realisation come from?
I often go to St Peter’s Church in Loughborough for a coffee. I have made many friends in here and was chatting away one morning about the artwork I had bought from the restored shop. I was told a really amazing piece of info about the shop. You see I didn’t know that the shop was a charity run shop and all the people working in here worked for the charity. I will tell you later what is so amazing about it!
What are the reasons for turning to a charity for help?
Sometimes in life things don’t always turn out the way we had hoped. We may have just lost that job we had for many years and are struggling to find a new one, a relationship break up may have happened, or we may just have found ourselves at a lonely time in our life and everything has become to overwhelming. When these things happen we try very hard to cope with them, but sometimes we end up going down a path that ends up leading to crime, addiction and possibly imprisonment. We may have visited the doctor and he may have prescribed drugs for us to take and eventually we become dependent on them, we also end up taking other drugs and likewise become dependent. Having a few drinks may seem like a good way to relax and forget all our troubles for a bit, but when things don’t get any better, that few drinks turns into a few bottles and before we know it, we cant go without it.
Many people find that they lose their loved ones and close friends. People that were once a part of your life have disappeared and there seems to be no help from anywhere.
How does a charity like Betel reach out to people and help them?
It’s a place where people can go for help. Betel give people the chance to make a fresh start and along with that comes acceptance, understanding and a non judgmental environment in which you can live and recover. After contacting Betel and talking to them, you can live in one of there many houses that they have around the country. The houses are not supported by the government and people that enter do give up their benefits before doing so. Entering and leaving is a choice made by you, although to enable you to get the best possible help many people stay for anything up to 18 months.
Life at Betel soon becomes a home and it is also a very safe place to be. All the help that people need is on hand, so doctors and other professionals are always close by to help people get through and off drugs or alcohol and to maintain this. Each day, there are lots of tasks and chores to be done. All the cooking and cleaning etc is taken on by you and the other people that stay here. There is also lots of team building and looking at ways to help build confidence again. You will of course meet many people and this is good, as it will give you the opportunity to not only talk to people who have been through the same thing, but also to make new friends.
As people start to feel stronger physically and emotionally there are other areas in which you can work within. One of the areas is that they have a number of shops across the country that sell furniture, ornaments and paintings etc for the home. All of the people that work in the shops do not take a wage and the money that is made from selling the goods goes back into the charity. The women that I have met work very hard and love the work that they do. They have each been on a journey and have shared their experiences with me, as to why they came to Betel. Each one is different, but they all have one thing in common and that is that they are well again and happy.
Betel is a christian based charity. People can learn about Christianity which in turn may give you the faith to believe in God and Jesus so that they can help you in your life. Betel offers people a chance in life, where others may have passed you by.
I think it is a wonderful charity and one that I am glad to have discovered. The way in which it helps people is amazing.
To all the guys at Loughborough
Thank you so much for welcoming me into your shop with open arms. From the bottom of my heart I want to tell you all that you have showed me that in life no matter how hard things are people do care and if you want to get better and heal you can. That there is light at the end of the tunnel and through trust, faith and love we can achieve great things in life and help others to do the same.
A massive hug and big love goes to all of you. God bless
