As we all know, men like to have a little place or a sanctuary that they can go to from time to time. A little place where they can unwind and take time to clear their mind and evaluate anything that may be going on in life. It’s simply called a shed. This little shed has become a place of peace, and somewhere to spend time and not worry about the world outside.
As a man gets older and eventually winds down and having somewhere to go and a hobby is so important. For years and years our granddads, dads, brothers etc have been up at the crack of dawn and out the house before most of us have even stirred. Off to work they go on their bicycles, walking or by car. Each day they go to work and get on with the job in hand. They make friends who become their workmates and at the end of the day may have a pint or three with them.
Then one day, comes the day that they never thought would come, and perhaps never really prepared for it’s called “Retirement.” Some men may have hobbies and have plans of what they will do when they no longer go to work. But for some they do not, and that’s where groups like “Men In Sheds” comes in.
Who Are Men In Sheds?
Men In Sheds is a group of guys who get together each week, as part of the age UK Charity. The little shed, has now become a big shed and the walk through the door is just like the good old days when you were back at work and sharing funny stories and pulling each others legs.
This group helps to keep moral up and keep you busy and active so that you feel that, although you may not be in a paid job anymore, you still have lots of skills and talents to teach and share with other people. It stops us from becoming down, feeling lonely or even depressed.
You Are Never Alone?
Some of the men may live alone and so, having this social interaction each week helps to keep their moral up. As we get older unfortunately some of the men may have had partners who have sadly passed away. Not only, are they no longer at work, but trying to come to terms with a bereavement as well. Not an easy process for anyone. Men in sheds are fully aware of the different life challenges that we face as we get older and try to, not only be a place to come to, to make things and socialise, but to make new friends who may have been through the same thing who can help you when you need it most.
What Activities Take Place Each Week?
There are a number of projects ongoing in the week at the Unit, so there is lots of variety. Repairing and giving items a new lease of life. Many of the items are then re-sold and the money goes back into the charity and group.
Sometimes they are asked for special requests, here is a commission they did of a wedding box
Here is a lovely flower box that they re-painted and created
They also do pottery, art, bike repairs, upholstery and many more
Going out in a group and taking part in things like darts, pool, snooker, cards or dominoes is something they do regularly. They also play musical instruments and have a sing along.
So, as you can see there is a varied amount of things to do.
I had the pleasure of meeting the group at “Picnic In The Park” ,Loughborough. They are all very friendly and very welcoming. I had some good banter with them, some of them are pictured above.
